Extract Text from Image

Upload any picture with words in it — a photo, a screenshot, a scan, a PDF — and get the text back as plain characters you can copy, search, and edit. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for on the first try.

First extraction free · no account needed · your file is deleted after it is read

The words are in the picture. This gets them out.

An image stores text as coloured dots, so you cannot select a sentence in it, search it for a name, or paste a number from it into a spreadsheet. An image text extractor reads those dots as letters (OCR) and hands the words back as text.

This page reads the whole image in one pass: printed text, small print, handwriting, text in several languages on the same page. Lines come back in reading order with their line breaks, and anything too blurred to read with confidence is marked [?] instead of being guessed.

How to extract text from an image

It works the same in a phone browser as on a computer:

  1. Upload the image above — drag it in, or pick it from your files or camera roll.
  2. Wait a few seconds while the words are read.
  3. Check names, numbers, and dates against the picture, then copy the text or save it as a file.

Supported formats

Any of these up to 10 MB per file. Large phone photos are turned upright and resized in your browser before upload, so a 12-megapixel shot does not need shrinking first. JPG to text and PDF to text go deeper on those two formats.

File types the image text extractor accepts
FormatWhat it usually is
JPGPhone photos and scans. The original reads better than a copy saved from a chat app.
PNGScreenshots and exported graphics. The sharpest case for small text.
WebPImages saved from websites. Read the same as PNG or JPG.
HEICiPhone camera photos, no conversion needed.
PDFScanned documents. Pages are read in order.

Languages

There is no language to pick. The reader recognises the script on its own, so a page that mixes languages comes back as it is, each line in its own alphabet. The example above is a real result: one image with lines in Polish, German, Spanish, French, Russian, Greek, Japanese, and Arabic, returned with every accent and character intact.

The text is transcribed, never translated or corrected — what you get is what the image says, typos included. To read it in another language, paste the result into a translator.

Copying and exporting the text

Copy the text puts the whole result on your clipboard in one click, ready to paste into an email, a document, a spreadsheet, or a chat. Download as a file saves it as a plain .txt file that opens anywhere. If you need an editable Word document instead, image to Word runs the same reader and downloads a .docx.

For many images, or to extract text from images inside your own app, the same reader is available as an HTTP API and an MCP server on the developer page.

Getting the cleanest result

Screenshots read best, because the text is sharp and evenly lit. For photos, the capture sets the ceiling: hold the camera parallel to the page, use soft light without flash, and fill the frame with the words — photo to text goes through it step by step. Handwriting works when it is dark and evenly spaced; handwriting to text covers what to expect, and reading blurry text is worth a try when you cannot retake the picture.
